The Toronto Maple Leafs are a professional ice hockey team based in Toronto, Ontario. They are members of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the NHL. The team is owned by Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, Ltd. and coached by Sheldon Keefe. The Maple Leafs have won thirteen Stanley Cup championships, second only to the Montreal Canadiens’ twenty-four.
The Maple Leafs were founded in 1917 as one of the Original Six teams of the NHL. The club was originally owned by the Arena Company, managed by Conn Smythe. Due to financial difficulties, the franchise was renamed the Toronto St. Patricks in 1919 before being purchased by Smythe and renamed the Maple Leafs in 1927. The team has played at Air Canada Centre since 1999.
The club’s last championship came in 1967 when they defeated the Montreal Canadiens in six games to win their second Stanley Cup. The Maple Leafs have not appeared in a Stanley Cup Final since then. Their most recent playoff appearance was in 2013, defeating the Detroit Red Wings in seven games during the first round before losing to the Boston Bruins in seven games during the second round.
The Maple Leafs have long-standing rivalries with the Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, and Ottawa Senators. The team has retired thirteen numbers in honor of sixteen players, including the first retired number in professional sports. Several individuals associated with the club have also been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
In terms of value, the franchise is worth an estimated $1.45 billion CAD, making it the most valuable franchise in Canada and second overall in the NHL behind the New York Rangers.
